41st Hawaii State House District Race: Open Letter to Rito Saniatan

Rito Saniatan,

I would like to salute you sir on your decision to run again as the Republican nominee for Hawaii House District 41. Your decision to run is a true testament your perseverance and your adherence to the conservative values of family, patriotism, capitalism, and the abolition of legislative tyranny manifest in the form of “big government.”

The reason your decision to run is so important is because the current incumbent Democrat Representative from District 41 has been systematically misleading the public with his real intentions and “buying” their votes. He sends out these “community reports” where he tells the voters how he is using “their” own tax money to fund community projects. What he fails to tell them is how he is (1) wasting their tax money when they themselves could be using it in ways that benefit themselves and their community more, and (2) projecting an extremely liberal agenda that he does not list in his “community reports.”

His blatant hypocrisy and total departure from what I believe are the common sense values of the voters of District 41 have led me to research and compile a list of “unadvertised” actions that Representative Jon Riki Karamatsu has engaged in over the last year. Please use my research as you see best fit during your election campaign to educate the voters of District 41 on this “wolf” in sheep’s clothing.

You only lost by a little over one thousand votes in 2004. Although this may sound like a low number, in a district where only a little over four thousand people showed up to vote, that is a serious hurdle to over come. But I am confident that if the voters in this district actually see the kind of policies that Representative Karamatsu ACTUALLY supports, this can be a very close race indeed. While these are only House Resolutions, they really speak volumes as to Karamatsu’s personal values, character, and liberal agenda. Please seriously consider distributing some of this information to the voters in your campaign material or anywhere else you feel it would get maximum exposure to the voters of District 41.

Resolutions Sponsored by Jon Riki Karamatsu during the last Legislative Session:

House Resolution 19 (House Draft 1) - REQUESTING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS, THE PRIME MINISTER OF JAPAN, THE JAPAN DEFENSE AGENCY, AND THE NATIONAL DIET OF JAPAN TO TAKE ACTION TO REDUCE THE UNITED STATES MILITARY PRESENCE IN OKINAWA. (Karamatsu Sponsored – Resolution PASSED)

        -       Requested the U.S. and Japan work to relocate U.S. military from Okinawa.  A debatable issue no doubt, but the wording of this Resolution is disturbing.  The reasons given in the Preamble include:

                                1)      Implied that there were autocracies committed against civilians in violation of the Geneva Convention by the U.S. military during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II.

                                2)      Accused the U.S. military in general of committing “heinous” crimes against citizens of Okinawa. Although there have been a handful of unfortunate incidents committed by a few service members, to call the U.S. military out in general as a reason for leaving is completely uncalled for in this Resolution.

House Resolution 33 - URGING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO SUPPORT IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF THE NATION'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS BY SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASING EDUCATION FUNDING. (Karamatsu Sponsored – Resolution PASSED)

        -       Requested the federal government spend more money on Hawaii public schools. With approximately $10,000 of tax payer money per student being spent in the current education system, more money is not what we need. A scrub of the current system to get rid of bureaucratic overhead that puts more of that $10,000 per student into the classrooms and out of the bureaucrats’ pockets is what we need. This shows a lack of prioritization of Karamatsu’s part.

House Resolution 64 - REQUESTING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU TO INCLUDE IN ITS TRANSPORTATION PLAN FOR A LIGHT RAIL SYSTEM AN ADDITIONAL SPUR LINE TO MILILANI. (Karamatsu Sponsored – Resolution PASSED)

        -       This Resolution shows that Karamatsu has identified a light rail system as a forgone conclusion for his solution to the traffic issues on Oahu. This system alone is unaffordable to an urban/suburban population base like Oahu’s of around 800,000, much less another 5 to 10 mile extension to Mililani. There are more reasonable and cost effect solutions to Oahu’s traffic needs than light rail, like elevated toll-ways for example.

House Resolution 73 – CONDEMNING THE USA PATRIOT ACT AS CONTRARY TO THE LONG STANDING TRADITION OF PROTECTING CIVIL LIBERTIES IN HAWAII AND THE UNITED STATES. (Karamatsu Cosponsored – Resolution REFERRED to Judiciary Committee)

        -       This proposed Resolution would condemn a crucial tool in the War on Terror as “un-American” and “un-Hawaiian” by the House of Representatives of the State of Hawaii. Karamatsu’s support for this resolution goes a long way in revealing the far left agenda that he supports. Among some of the provisions of this Resolution:

                                1)      Resolves that no State of Hawaii funds would be used to carry out federal investigations of suspected terrorists in Hawaii.

                                2)      Requests Hawaii’s Congressional Representatives and Senators work to repeal the Patriot Act.

House Resolution 108 (House Draft 1) – URGING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO LEGALIZE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND REQUESTING THE FEDERAL AND STATE DEPARTMENTS OF HEALTH TO PROVIDE MEDICAL SERVICES TO THIS POPULATION IN MEDICAL EMERGENCIES. (Karumatsu Cosponsored – Resolution not passed in HD1 form)

        -       This proposed Resolution would have asked the federal government not to deport any illegal immigrants and make all illegal immigrants legal residents of the United States. It would have also asked for a “socialized” form of health care to be made available to all illegal aliens. This is probably one of the best examples of “One World” anti-“American Nationalism” liberalism that I have ever seen and, not surprisingly, Karumatsu cosponsored it. Luckily, this Resolution was amended with a complete substitute Resolution in committee and not passed as this. (Although the Resolution wording actually passed was not all that great either.)

House Resolution 219 – URGING THE PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO END THE UNITED STATES’ RULE IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATION OF IRAQ AND TO TAKE NECESSARY ACTION TO BEGIN WITHDRAWAL OF UNITED STATES TROOPS FROM IRAQ. (Karamatsu Cosponsored – Resolution REFERRED to the Public Safety and Military Affairs Committee.)

        -       Just as the title of this Resolution states, it would ask the federal government to “cut and run” from our obligations in Iraq. A few points to ponder with this Resolution:

                                1)      The title of this Resolution uses the wording “United States’ Rule in the Military Occupation of Iraq.” The “Military Occupation” of Iraq ended in July of 2004 with the turnover of power to the Iraq Government. The Iraqi people have been to the polls three times since the liberation of Iraq, and currently have their own Constitution and elected governmental body. What “U.S. Rule” is Karamatsu and his cohorts referring to?

                                2)      The Resolution also states that, “The United States was not threatened with imminent attack by Iraq.” This is not a true statement. Saddam Hussein was tracking, and occasionally firing on, U.S. warplanes patrolling the No Fly Zones over Iraq. Although he stopped for a few months after September 11th, 2001, for fear of an all out U.S. attack after the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, he went right back to “lighting up” our planes within a few months in 2002. Clinton may not have cared if Saddam was endagering the lives of our military members, but President Bush surely did. Looks like Karamatsu and his friends didn't seem to care to much either.

                                3)      The Resolution also cites a report in the British medical journal “Lancet” stating that there have been over 100,000 Iraqi casualties since the U.S. liberation of Iraq. This source has been debunked by most experts as being a farcical piece of biased reporting by the author. Additionally, the wording of this part of the Resolution makes it sound like Iraqis were better off under the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein than under their very own freely elected government.

House Resolution 220 – CONDEMNING WARRANTLESS WIRETAPPING OF AMERICAN CITIZENS BY THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY AS UNCONSTITUTIONAL, ILLEGAL, AND IMMORAL IN LIGHT OF THE IMPORTANCE THAT THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY BE FREE FROM TYRANNY. (Karamatsu Cosponsored – Resolution REFERRED to the Judiciary Committee.)

        -       This proposed Resolution is nothing more than a liberal rant and can not be taken seriously by anyone. The idea that the NSA uses this program to tyrannize American citizens is insane. This program is not only perfectly legal, but if falls within the Presidents powers under the Constitution to “Support and Defend” the United States. Furthermore this has been a useful tool in stopping terrorist attacks against our country. It only targets calls between U.S. citizens and suspected terrorists outside the United States. As President Bush said in a speech on 05 September 2006, “If al-Qaida is calling people inside the United States, we want to know about it.” The liberal ideology contained in this Resolution is exactly the kind of thinking that is going to get Americans killed.

Questionable Activities:

Additionally, I caught Representative Karamatsu "pandering" for votes house to house in my condominium complex on Labor Day. Now riddle me this if you will:

        -       Why is it that Republican candidates for Senate District 19, like Mike Gabbard and Robert Fong, mail me campaign letters that specifically say that the reason they are mailing me letters, and not coming to my door and talking with me like Karamatsu did, is because there are “No Solicitation” signs up at the entrance to my condominium complex . Is not solicitation on posted private property illegal? So what makes Karamatsu so special? Is he “above” the law or something? To top that, he was claiming to “represent” Karamatsu and not actually telling people the he “was” Karamatsu. That seemed mighty shady to me.

Very Respectfully,

GLG
